Every year the people of Alcoy hold a 3 day celebration reenacting the 13th century battle between Moors and Christians. According to legend, when the Moorish chief Al-Azraq entered the city with his army, Saint George appeared on horseback to help the city, which swore to build a temple in his honour and to feast him.
