In the middle of La Victoria, a poor but vibrant area of inner city Lima, an effigy of Our Lady of the Door (la Virgin de la Puerta) lives on the second floor of a car repair garage. Her devotees, who visit her regularly and take her out in procession twice a year, include a group of transexuals. In the mid '90s Lorena 'Luz Clarita' was their de facto leader.
I had the honour of being considered their 'official photographer' when I was living in Lima.
